On September 17, the VFF announced a 29-player Vietnam U17 squad for the training camp preparing for the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026, a tournament that kicks off on November 19 and closes on December 13. But after reading all 29 lines, what held my eye longest was not the seven new names, but where those names stand on the pitch.

The five names singled out as pillars — defenders Nguyen Ngoc Anh Hao and Tran Hoang Viet; midfielders Chu Ngoc Nguyen Luc and Dao Quy Vuong; forward Le Trong Dai Nhan — all stay.

The seven new players come from PVF (three of them: Nguyen Viet Dung, Bui Trung Hieu, Nguyen Trong Phong), Hanoi, Cong An Ha Noi, The Cong - Viettel and SHB Da Nang. The preparation route runs in three stages: a domestic camp at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre, then a West Asian camp, then the move to Qatar. From November 19, Roland's side meets Mali, Belgium and New Zealand in Group G.

What the seven names tell me

The blind spot of the official story

The absence of any forward among the seven additions can be read two opposite ways: the staff believes the goalscoring burden is already covered, or no convincing upgrade was available domestically.
