Cong An Nhan Dan Sign 2.01m Gonzalo Fornari: Two Foreign Strikers, One Registration Slot, and the 15 October Deadline

I was sitting in the press area at Long An stadium on 11 September, close enough to hear coach Nguyen Duc Thang shout through the noise of the stands. On the team sheet taped outside the dressing room, the foreign-player column for Cong An Nhan Dan was empty. No Santos Thaileon. The man who had just won the First Division Golden Boot with 14 goals for Quy Nhon United was not on the list. The club had spent real money to bring him in, and on opening day they fielded exactly one domestic striker.

The match finished 2-1. Nguyen Hoang Anh, a substitute, scored both goals. Three points went to the home side in a way nobody had drawn up beforehand. In the stands, people talked about Thaileon's absence. On the pitch, a different story was being written: Cong An Nhan Dan had just signed Gonzalo Fornari, a Brazilian striker standing 2.01 metres tall, ready for both the National Cup and the rest of the First Division campaign.

Cong An Nhan Dan, formerly PVF-CAND, entered the 2026-2027 season with a single objective: win the First Division and take the promotion ticket. Every transfer decision the club made revolved around that target.

Early in the season they signed Santos Thaileon. It was a deal so logical it was hard to argue with: a Brazilian striker who had already proven he could score in the exact competition the club wanted to win, 14 goals in one season, no adaptation period required. On paper, this was the foreign profile every First Division club wants.

Then came round one, and he was not registered.

That is the most important fact in this story, and the most overlooked one. A club signs a Golden Boot winner and does not use him in the opening match. There are many reasonable explanations: fitness, paperwork, administrative issues in an international transfer, or simply a coaching decision. But the consequence is clear: the team had to fall back on its backup plan in the very first match of the season.

Shortly after, they signed Gonzalo Fornari. The 26-year-old spent last season at Busan IPark in K League 2, scoring seven goals. His 2.01-metre frame makes him the tallest foreign player currently active in both the First Division and V-League.

A club that already has one unregistered striker signing another striker. That is a squad-management problem, not merely a technical one.

Now look at the numbers. Thaileon: 14 goals in the First Division, a league whose tempo, defensive quality and style of defender we know well. Fornari: seven goals in K League 2, a competition with higher overall quality but a completely different rhythm and defensive profile. Those two records cannot be compared directly.

They can, however, both be compared with a case that already played out on Vietnamese soil. Earlier, Nam Dinh signed Kyle Hudlin, an English striker standing 2.06 metres. His record before arriving was eye-catching: a brace in the 2026 Super Cup that Nam Dinh lost 2-3 to Cong An Ha Noi, a brace against the Vietnam national team in a 4-0 friendly win, and a goal in a 1-3 away defeat to Gamba Osaka in the 2026-2026 AFC Champions League. Three competitions, three scoring occasions.

Then in V-League 2026-2026: no goals in five matches, and an early exit through injury.

I spent an entire evening rewatching every involvement Hudlin had in those five games, wide angles, slow motion. The problem was not his aerial ability. The problem was how V-League teams defend tall strikers: marking in front, cutting the passing lane into the box, clearing second balls from the midfield line, and most importantly, denying a target man the time to control the ball in an advantageous position. Crosses into V-League penalty areas usually arrive with at least two defenders contesting, at a level of physical contact a newly arrived foreign striker is not yet used to.

Height is an input metric, not an output metric. A 2.01-metre striker is only valuable when the team's passing system is built around him. Otherwise, height is just a number on a profile sheet.

This places Cong An Nhan Dan in an interesting position. They have one striker proven in the exact competition they need, and another with a completely different physical profile. In theory, that is an ideal pairing. But registration rules do not care about theory.

There is another way to read this, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Signing Fornari before Thaileon took the pitch is not necessarily a sign of chaos. It may be a sign of reading the calendar carefully. The National Cup registration deadline is 3pm on 17 September. The First Division deadline is 3pm on 15 October. Between those two dates lies almost a month, and in that month the club hosts Hue at home in the National Cup qualifier on 6 October, then travels to Khanh Hoa in round two of the First Division on 11 October.

The coaching staff has genuine time to test. They can use the National Cup as a laboratory, give Fornari minutes, measure his adaptation, and then decide who gets registered for the main competition. That is sound risk management.

The problem lies elsewhere: when you have two foreign players for one slot, you do not just create competition, you create a loser inside the dressing room. At a club chasing the title, that loser still has to train, still has to sit on the bench, still has to stay professional for the rest of the season.

I keep a notebook, and it does not record goals. It records dates, deadlines, and the number of registration slots.

By 3pm on 15 October, Cong An Nhan Dan will have to choose. That choice will say more than any statement about winning the title. Because there are contracts signed on the pitch, and contracts signed in the dark. The question for the fans is not who is taller, but who will be on the field when the referee blows the whistle.
