Over two days of play at Draycott, no player shed fewer games than Cindy Xiao. She conceded exactly six games across nine round-robin matches, the best figure in both the boys' and the girls' draws at the England Hopes Challenge. Cindy Xiao did not win the title.

This event carries no ranking points, no prize money, no crowd. For someone who works with data, those are ideal conditions. When the stands are empty, I see the truest version of a player — no result pressure distorting competitive behaviour.

The trade-off is a very small denominator. Nine matches. One weekend. Ten familiar opponents. That is the single largest limit on everything that follows.

What the data actually shows

The boys' draw first. Prasanna Kumar beat Leo Shahmurov 3-1 in round six, Lusio Wen 3-1 in round seven, and Jonti Barnes 3-2 in round eight with 11-5 in the deciding game. Third: whether the round-robin format is retained, because it is more honest than knockout at this age — it rewards consistency and removes draw luck.

Nine matches cannot define a player. But nine fully recorded matches, plus four or five more events over the next three years, can start to define something. The analyst's job is to stay long enough to see whether that sequence forms.
